Buddha Life, ZENful Life: 81 Buddhists Speak on the Meaning of Life (Mindful Life)

What happens when 91 Buddhists from around the world reflect on one timeless question:
“What is the meaning of life?”

Between 2015 and 2020, journalist and author Nicolae Tanase asked more than a thousand spiritual teachers, practitioners, writers, artists, and thinkers from around the world a single question: What is the meaning of life?

From those encounters grew Buddha Life, ZENful Life, now expanded to bring together 91 reflections on life, awakening, and meaning. Buddhist teachers, monks, Zen practitioners, scholars, contemplatives, and other voices touched by Buddhist wisdom offer perspectives shaped by meditation, compassion, self-inquiry, and the search for a meaningful life.

They do not speak with one voice—and that is precisely the point. Some explore awakening and Buddha Mind; others reflect on compassion, emptiness, suffering, happiness, selflessness, rebirth, awareness, or the mystery of simply being alive. Some answers are profound and philosophical. Others are strikingly simple.

In these pages, you’ll discover:
Personal perspectives on Buddhahood, Buddha Mind, awakening, and enlightenment
Reflections on compassion, selflessness, wisdom, and the nature of happiness
Insights into suffering, joy, emptiness, awareness, interbeing, and the nature of self
91 distinct encounters with the meaning of life, from traditional Buddhist teachings to deeply personal reflections
A contemplative book to return to again and again as a companion to your meditation, mindfulness, or spiritual practice

This is not a textbook on Buddhism, nor does it offer a single answer. It is a living conversation—a gathering of voices willing to look deeply into one of humanity’s oldest questions.

A book to live with, not just read

There is no prescribed way to read this book. Begin at the beginning, or simply open it anywhere and spend a few quiet minutes with the voice you encounter.

Read one reflection a day and allow it to accompany your meditation or journaling.
Open the book in a difficult or uncertain moment and sit quietly with the reflection you find.
Carry a sentence with you throughout the day.
Share a passage with your sangha, study group, yoga or meditation class.
Return months or years later and discover that familiar words may speak to you differently.

These 91 reflections invite you to sit with the question “What is the meaning of life?”—not necessarily to arrive at an intellectual answer, but to explore it through your own experience.
